Song: Kings Of Leon – On Call
Duration: 3 minutes 23 seconds
Audience: The song itself is for ages 8-30 but the video, due to the strong referencing to overdosing and alcohol abuse, we have bumped up the target audience from the age of 17 to 30.
What the Song/Video’s About?
The song is about a man expressing his devotion to his girlfriend with the intertextuality of being a doctor “On Call”. We wanted to convey this but in from the opposite perspective. The idea of the man not being loyal to his girlfriend and then, consequently, ending up dead at the end of the video is a contradiction to the lyrics. However we wanted some feel of romance which is why we will end the video with the image that shows both the romancers dead yet appear to be holding hands (through editing). As well as this due to the fact its a rock song we wanted to keep the conventions of the genre therefor we are including performances by some members of the group playing parts of the songs on instruments as well as lip-syncing the vocals.
Mise-En-Scene
We need to have, for the video, a variety of drinks (alcoholic) as well as multiple drugs (medicinal). As well as this we need instruments such as guitars and bass guitars. Microphones and amps will be useful as well. Due to the fact the video is heavily based on relationships we are going to have phones and on the side for the violent sections a variety of weapons will be used.
We will also need costumes from, preferably, a dress for the girl and a hooded outfit for the man. We aren’t going for a gangster look but urban with the sense of city life rather then violence.
Effects
We will also use one type of effect within the video. We are, if able to pull it off, going to animate what can be seen as a violent scenario as we do not want to promote or glamorize the violence we intend to show. The idea was to have the female slit her wrist or the male to be stabbed. If the animation can’t hide the violence and change its perspective we will just not show the actual slitting/stabbing actually taking place. Instead we will just show one of the two protagonists facial expression to the actual harm. We will also being shooting it all before editiing it in the post-production stage to appear black and white, this is inspired by 'The A-Team' video and gives it a more authentic, emotionally captivating look.
Recording Days - We plan on recording for about 5 days in total. The filming will be done in town, pubs, bars and houses. The City Centre will also be used but this is a generalization of the other locations as well. We will require a day to film the fall-out of the two lead actors. On top of this we will also require a day to film in a music recording studio where the performance will be done. The outside sections will be done over the course of 2-3 days depending on the availability and access to selective locations. Editing will take 3 days therefor over the course of the time we are looking at a 2-3 week timeline to film, edit and complete our music video.
