DJ Fresh - Louder ft. Sian Evans

Joe

The CategoryThis qualifies for a illustration category; the video consists of lots of people riding around Western America on roller skates, skateboards and BMX’s performing tricks. It is all based around the energy and adrenaline that are present in extreme sports.

The Genre Of The Song- The genre of the song has been labeled ‘Dubstep’.Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music. Its overall sound has been described as 'tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals.

The Artist, Song Title, The Genre Of The Music- DJ Fresh ft. Sian Evans – Louder. DJ Fresh is known as a dubstep/ drum and bass production artist and is well known in the dance genre. DJ Fresh has played at really well known venues and festivals such as Wakestock, Global Gathering and Parklife UK along with other dance artists such as Nero, Katy B and Kelis.

Goodwins Analysis-

Genre Characteristics - This music video does demonstrate characteristics of the music genre because their active performance on their rollerskates matches the up-tempo, lively music. The sun and the colorful clothing makes us think of summer which was when the song was released and could be argued to be labeled the 'summer song of 2011'.

Relationships Between the Lyrics and Visuals - 'You cant tame this energy inside' is the only potential visible connection between lyrics and visuals. These lyrics are a reference to the upbeat synths and heavy beats which matches the performers 'un tamed energy'.

Relationships Between Music and Videos - The visual scene seems to change with the beat of the snare more or less throughout the whole of the video. Also when the Chorus drops the scenes turn into slow motion which matches the mellow yet powerful bass-line during the chorus.

Close up of Artists - The DJ and singer aren’t presented in the video. This is usually to put the emphasis on the music and beat as appose to the actual artist. Close ups of artists are only usually used in pop chart music usually.

Notion of Looking - There is a slight voyeuristic treatment of women in this video. The women rollerbladers are attractive and are portrayed in shorts and summer wear. However, they aren't dressed to as much of an extreme as you would expect in Rap or RnB videos.

Intertexual Reference - There isn't any, it seems that the skateboard video idea was an original.

Locations/Lighting - The locations used are mainly consistent of what appears to be West American coastline. This is to express the summer theme that the song tries to give off, as it is a summer anthem. Therefore the lighting is high key and natural with vibrant colors to connote that summer theme. Within most of the shots there are palm trees and beaches that are related towards summer e.g. Hawaii (which is seen as one of the most exotic places in the world).

Editing/FX - The editing is fast and synchronized with the beat, dependant on the stunt preformed, and will make the viewing of the video smooth and coherent to the song. There are special effects but in the form of slow motion, all of which are done within the editing sweet rather then an FX room i.e. green screen. This is to keep the summer feel of the video that’s intended to show beauty and the naturalistic scenery that, just like the locations do, express the summer theme.

Props

The props used in this video consist of rollerblades, skateboards , bmx's this promotes freedom and the free will to roam around the street sand enjoy yourself. Also it is summer when this video was filmed so especially links in well with props due to people going out on their skateboards etc when it is sunny outside.

Craig Davis Analysis

For this video there is not many links between the lyrics an the video but in my opinion i would suggest that there is because as the chorus shouts out "Louder" the stunts get bigger hence the chorus. Also there is links between the lyrics and the visuals because as the song is called "Louder" the clothes the characters are wearing are bright colours and as the duration of the song follows through the colours get louder and bigger connoting the title of the song.

Camera Use

  • Extreme close ups to show the different extreme sports equipment they are using
  • Establishing shots setting the scene of the skate park
  • Tracking shots showing where the female protagonists are skating to
  • Over the shoulder shots to show how much fun they are having from their point of view
  • Close ups of a variety of skaters
  • Long shot of certain locations
  • Low angle shot when attempting to capture the natural lighting
  • High angle for certain stunts for a better view
  • Panning shots to capture the entire feel of what the on-lookers are feeling
  • Medium shots on certain stunts are also used
  • Two-shots are used to connote the friendships within having fun in summer
