The Opening Script

This will act as the main guidline for our video's opening scene. The reason we want some acting with vocals is that many videos within modern day rock begin with a short dramatic interlude that gives it a more cinematic feel.

(0:00 - 0:38) Boy and girl are silent and there is an obvious anger between them as they stand near the front door.

Girl: So your just gonna leave is that it!

Boy: Im finished! dont you get that, finished with you!

Boy begins to put on jacket

Girl: Oh I get every day mate! you never even started!

Boy: You never gave me the chance!

Girl: Oh... thats just great, is that what this is about?

Boy: Dont get me started

Girl: Oh okay fine just go then... just how dare you ever think of me as some easy target

Boy: Well you made it easy for hundreds of guys before

Girl slaps him. The man slams past her and grabs some alcohol in anger before storming out of the house. Meanwhile the girl is screaming.

Girl: Get out! how dare you after what youve done! how dare you! how dare you!

Boy leaves as girl breaks down and cries.

Casting The Female Lead

To cast the role of the lead female in our 'Music Video Production' we took the initiative and began asking some of our friends if they would be interested. We wanted someone who would match our male lead (John) so that the girlfriend/boyfriend look would be matched. However asking people was not enough and there were not many oppertunities to do so through our daily routine. This is why an advertisement for the role was posted via the social networking site 'Facebook' due to the fact more people at a variety of times would respond and see what was required. The wall-post was written as followed...

"Hello all female friends, we need one of you lucky people to star in our music video for our A2 Media work.... if your interested in being the one who slaps a man, takes drugs and then kills herself then boy are you in for a treat because coincidently thats what were looking for you to do! inbox me your interests and we'll see who matches the part and matches the guy who will play your boyfriend... thankyou (and sorry for the worlds corniest message) :)"
The user friendly approach with the humour i.e. within the parenthesis, was to give that more authentic twenty first century feel where it feels personal. The smiley face was also done so and gives it a more innocent feel. This message recieved great attention from a variety of my friends and sparked interest towards the role that, narrowed down the most dedicated, three people were battling for.

Over much thought and discussion we finally narrowed it down to someone who was devoted, enthusiastic, optimistic and had some experience in acting. The script was generally laid out for them but no real written-work was done. With the lead roles set and finalised filming could commence which is our plan for the forthcoming week at the maximum.

Costumes

As a performer (Joe) I decided that wearing 'rock wear' would have been obvious, to the audience it would have been cliche. I thought it would have been more appropriate to try and match the street theme of our film, the fact that John is going around town drinking on the streets. But also decided to wear a skull guitar strap to match each theme we approached. Rock and Street. Skulls are heavily linked to certain apsects of rock, such as metal, with artists like Metallica featuring them frequently. This is why we settled on using it for this specific video in contrast to the hoodie. The hoodie was made to appear black and white, not only to match the rest of the video, but also to make it more 'Rock & Roll'.

These garments will make the costume in which the protaganist (John) will be wearing during his acting role in the narrative part of the music video. These clothes were chosen because it fits with the stylish attributes he is trying to put across as he made the decision of going out on the town so this is usually the dress sense/code. Furthermore he is a young man so these clothes perfectly with his age. It was to show sense of being in the norm in contrast to the lead singer and guitarist and is juxtaposed by that. This running theme of one person dresses normally and another a bit over-the-top is found in many rock videos from artists like Nirvana and Green Day. It gives us a different feel to certain modern day rock bands as this was mainly done back in the 80's to 90's, the introduction of artists like Nirvana and David Bowie.

We used a combination of a scarf, hat and shirt for the guitarist and lead singer to connote the style of the singer and guitarist to be irregular. The simplistic colors of black and white are to show how ordinary I really was doing the role and the fact there is not situation in which you would wear a scarf and a vest at the same time is to express some sense of being unusual such as most rock-stars do, like The Rolling Stones. It's in sync with the rock genre and the hat was a play on the guitarist Slash from the band Guns'N'Roses and was highly inspired by his fashion sense. This link was to make the video stand out more then other videos and prove to the audiance who view it that we are a serious rock band as we want to be compared to the likes of rock mega stars such as Guns'N'Roses or David Bowie.

Locations

Manchester Town -

We have decided that we will use urban locations, as a large proportion of the story is based within clubs, bars and pubs. Because of this we will go into Manchester with a few bars and clubs in mind and see their availability and how realistic it will look e.g. Does John look like he attend a club like this? Is his dress code appropriate? Consequently we decided to settle on Piccadilly Gardens as we were unable to access any sort of pub as we are underage.
We will also be using a house for the 'argument' scene. We haven't fully decided whose house to use but we are considering each one of our houses, the house will have to appear like students live in there so maybe we'll choose a house that is closest to a student area in Manchester. If we couldn't have found this kind of house, we thought we would just stick with the house we decide is most fitting. The house that follows, however, is the house eventually settled one.

Streets shots and alley shots will be used frequently within our production. Our protagonist (John) will be walking down the streets and alley ways, portraying that he is drinking spirits. The fact that he is drinking in the streets shows the serious effects the break up has on our characters. These alley ways had to look both urban yet a nice environment to film in as we didn't want to give off a completely dull impression so early on into our video. We, therefore, settled on an alley that looks like the one in the following picture.

Opening Scene Story Board

The very first shot within our music video (for the narrative section) will be of the man putting on his coat during an dispute. It will be tame in how we shoot it so will consist of medium shots and will last for a few seconds.

The next will be of the female in anger which will be portrayed using close ups and extreme close ups. The emotions expressed by her paralinguistcal features will be focused on heavily to try and pick out the most vital, yet common, aspects of someone who has been hurt emotionally.

There will be a few over the shoulder shots as well as close ups and medium shots during the moments the male lead accuses the female lead of cheating. It will be made even more powerful with the subtle use of high/low angle shots to show dominance in the scene.

The slap will be filmed using shaky cam and possibly with a P.O.V shot. This is to put you in the places of both characters, the shaky cam being the females rage and the P.O.V shot being from the males perspective. A two shot and medium shot may also be used.

This will then be followed by the male lead walking away in anger with alcohol in his hands. Only a medium shot/close ups will be used for the simplicity to relfex how simple the idea was for him to just walk out on her and leave her to be.

The final shot will be of the female lead in tears (or in total fury) and she will be captivated by emotions that express her sorrow to the watching audiance so that they can relate to or sympathise with.

Brief Overall Story Board

The opening scene consists of the couple breaking up and we will attempt to convey the emotion behind it through a variety of close-ups and extreme close-ups. It will last around 37 seconds in total and will be the foundation to our music video and all that is to follow.

This will either be followed by or green screened with a performance piece where we will act out and lip-sync the song which is one of the conventions of a rock video. This will consist of some medium shots, close ups and long shots.

There will then be a few shots of the protagnosists (female and male) showing their first steps into their fatal actions. The man will be drinking heavily and the girl overdosing knowingly. This will be done with close ups, medium shots and extreme close-ups.

This will then be followed by a further performance, more focused upon the guitars used (bass/electric) to give it the more authentic rock look.

Then will follow some medium, establishing, close-ups, extreme close-ups and a few panning with high angle/low angle shots. The sheer variety of shots is to captivate the viewer during the climax to the narrative of the video and convey the emotions of the song and story in an approximated 31 second slot.

The final moments of the video will consist of medium shots/close-ups to fully engadge the viewer into whats happening in the video. There will be a split screen to make it seem as if the girl and boy are holding hands at death.

John's Last Week Analysis

Last week we started doing our filming for our overall production . We started off in the music room in college filming the performance part of our video in which will be used in certain parts of our narrative music video, it started off with close ups of Joe's hand playing the Bass Guitar this was the only proper piece of film we was satisfied with because we opted to do filming of a drumming piece but we all needed more practice to get the tempo right. Also we was having trouble syncing the music with playing of the instruments as the instruments were too loud in comparison to the song so we couldn't hear it properly.

Joe's Last Week Analysis

I am in charge of choosing the cast for our video.

With our track being an indie rock video this gave us the opportunity to perform the actual music ourselves. Koceila and I have decided to perform and took time to learn the song on our favored instruments in order to make the video more realistic and convincing. We could have played random notes on the guitar and tried to sync it to our song but this wouldn't have looked right and we would've have benefitted a lot more if we performed the right song.

We chose John to be the protagonist, this was because he wanted to be in the music video and couldn't play an instrument. He fitted this part most out of us all as he has experience with modeling and this would make him confident in front of the camera.

Koceila's Last Weeks Analysis

Last week we finalized the story and completed the story board. There was lots of discussions and complaints from different members of the group to how the story should finish. We wanted the characters to either die at the end after a depressing narrative was told or to re-wind the events and have it end happily with them actually sorting things out and playing out the events how they were supposed to at the beginning. Finally we settled on telling a depressing story due to the fact that there are no re-winds in life and we wanted to be brutal with the story we were conveying to the audience.

Treatment

Song: Kings Of Leon – On Call

Duration: 3 minutes 23 seconds

Audience: The song itself is for ages 8-30 but the video, due to the strong referencing to overdosing and alcohol abuse, we have bumped up the target audience from the age of 17 to 30.

What the Song/Video’s About?

The song is about a man expressing his devotion to his girlfriend with the intertextuality of being a doctor “On Call”. We wanted to convey this but in from the opposite perspective. The idea of the man not being loyal to his girlfriend and then, consequently, ending up dead at the end of the video is a contradiction to the lyrics. However we wanted some feel of romance which is why we will end the video with the image that shows both the romancers dead yet appear to be holding hands (through editing). As well as this due to the fact its a rock song we wanted to keep the conventions of the genre therefor we are including performances by some members of the group playing parts of the songs on instruments as well as lip-syncing the vocals.

Mise-En-Scene

We need to have, for the video, a variety of drinks (alcoholic) as well as multiple drugs (medicinal). As well as this we need instruments such as guitars and bass guitars. Microphones and amps will be useful as well. Due to the fact the video is heavily based on relationships we are going to have phones and on the side for the violent sections a variety of weapons will be used.

We will also need costumes from, preferably, a dress for the girl and a hooded outfit for the man. We aren’t going for a gangster look but urban with the sense of city life rather then violence.

Effects

We will also use one type of effect within the video. We are, if able to pull it off, going to animate what can be seen as a violent scenario as we do not want to promote or glamorize the violence we intend to show. The idea was to have the female slit her wrist or the male to be stabbed. If the animation can’t hide the violence and change its perspective we will just not show the actual slitting/stabbing actually taking place. Instead we will just show one of the two protagonists facial expression to the actual harm. We will also being shooting it all before editiing it in the post-production stage to appear black and white, this is inspired by 'The A-Team' video and gives it a more authentic, emotionally captivating look.

Recording Days - We plan on recording for about 5 days in total. The filming will be done in town, pubs, bars and houses. The City Centre will also be used but this is a generalization of the other locations as well. We will require a day to film the fall-out of the two lead actors. On top of this we will also require a day to film in a music recording studio where the performance will be done. The outside sections will be done over the course of 2-3 days depending on the availability and access to selective locations. Editing will take 3 days therefor over the course of the time we are looking at a 2-3 week timeline to film, edit and complete our music video.

Music Video For DJ Fresh ft. Sian Evans - Louder

Music Video For Manchester Orchestra - Virgin

Ed Sheeran - The A-Team (Music Video Inspiration)

The music video is our basis for the way we will film and edit our music video. The black and white style became appealing to us and the way the narrative progressed was also fitting to our tragedy video. Despite the difference in genres we want to bring the similarities of desperation, depression and sorrow into our video and we believe this style of filming with our selected narrative (that coincidently is similar to 'The A-Team') the song 'On Call' will be perfect for this style of video.

FX - The only use of FX in this video is at the end when her image is in the sky. This is due to the fact the video has to feel natural as it is realistic and that effect is mainly to contrast her death and show her in the heavens.

Editing - The entire video is edited to appear black and white to show the narrative in an old fashion way. It makes it more powerful too. However at the end there is some colour when her face is in the sky to show the light and beauty of her life arriving only in her death. There is also some fast forwarding within the video to show the transition of time going by and her doing the same thing (watching the world or beginning).

Lighting - Its low key and very dark throughout the video to contrast her dark life. Its depressing which is good as it fits the video, narrative and the lyrics to the song "Lights gone, days end". This also explains why the entire video is shot during the night too. However there is high key lighting which is natural at the end to press on the idea that she is at peace and beautiful at death.

Locations - Its mainly urban and on the streets with a few car parks appearing to show she is a street lurker and a druggy. An apartment is used to connote the sex and prostitution but besides this there are not that many locations used as the simplicity and realistic feel to the narrative would be broken.

Joe
Genre Characteristics - Indie rock is supposed to be a slow, emotional genre and this video portrays just that. The video is slow moving, she seems to move about aimless and of course its emotional because she is homeless. Rock makes us think of long hair, black clothing and pale skin so this has been referenced with the black and white footage.

Relationships between lyrics and Visuals - "Go mad for a couple grams" this this is towards the end of the video when she is taking drugs after encounters with the stranger. "Its too cold outside" is a link to the visuals because she is homeless and has to face the cold regardless if whether she wants too. Also Ed mentions "For angels to fly" at the same time there is medium shot of a slogan on a billboard which says "improving the angel" the angel being the girl and the improvement being along the lines of rehabilitation.

Relationships between music and video
- There doesn't seem to be any relationship between the music and the video.

Close up of artists - Because the music video is a narrative we aren't used to seeing close ups of the artists. However Ed Sheeran is featured in this video with a medium shot but only briefly for a few seconds. The reason for this will be so that people will get to know who the artist is.

Notion of looking-The female character is looked down upon due to her being homeless and is portrayed as a sex symbol due to her being a prostitute to gain money to actually survive and get by. This narrative is a good choice for this song because its slow and sad and makes the audience feel sorry for the female an her experiences.

Intertexual References - There isn't any formal type of intertexual references in this video because its just a narrative and is not trying to advertise anything.

John
Props - The props used in this video are Drugs, Bed Sheets, Duvets which represent the female character is homeless and needy. There is also the selling of the Big Issue which is also a big sign to the audience that she is homeless as the paper is associated with this. Furthermore make up is used to represent her prostitution.

Craig Davis Analysis - For this video there is a obvious link with the lyrics and the video, they are not in chronological order but overall they tell a narrative story of how the female gets by in life living on the streets sung by Ed Sheeran.

Camera Use
  • Long shots to set the scene of the narrative to the audience
  • Close ups to show the emotions of the homeless female and the drugs to emphasize its importance to her
  • Extreme close up of the males hand on her leg showing his superiority over her
  • High angle to show dominance over certain characters
  • Low angle shots to show the vulnerability of the female
  • Medium shots of her sleeping to set the general tone
  • Establishing shots
  • Shallow focusing to emphasize the protagonist
  • Tracking shot as she walks into the flat
  • Two shot when the protagonist and Ed Sheeran are together

Joe's Last Week Analysis

We reduced the song choices down to 3 songs. These are all classed as Indie Rock.

We considered 'MGMT - Kids' which is an upbeat, catchy riffed, very well known indie track. The best fitting idea for this would be to create a montage/art house video. We decided against this because it wouldn't work as well as a narrative or a performance in our opinion.

Another song we have considered is 'Arctic Monkeys - Rits to Rubble'. Which would be a narrative. The lyrics talk about being thrown out of a night club queue, we could visually portray this and then the rest of the video could be the people (kids) that got kicked out of the club going about the town causing trouble and acting up.

Another song we considered is 'Kings of Leon - On Call'. The lyrics seem to portray a relationship where the recipients are so close that they are 'on call' to each other if they are ever in need. Between the group we came up with the idea that, the couple go through a breakup at the beginning of the video and throughout the duration of the video they both individually become lost without their other half and start to act stupidly, towards the end of the video the boy, who is currently out with his friend very drunk, see's numerous missed calls of his distressed girlfriend and returns to her 'on call'.

Koceila's Last Weeks Analysis

We decided the story had to be structured into a story board. As a group we based it upon our initial idea (See Joe's Analysis) but had to create different storyboards for the other songs. We joined the story for 'On Call' and 'Mr Brightside' due to the similarity of the songs lyrics. 'From the ritz to rubble' had a similar theme to 'Club Foot' as well, which made deciding which song to do harder due to the fact we enjoyed both songs and ideas linked to them. 'Kids' stood out on its own which made it even harder due to the sheer difference in story, theme, genre and attitutudes we wanted to convey to the audiance. Our planning crossed over the weekend and the story boards as well as planning for filming was being heavily thought of by all members of the group. On Monday morning, however, we settled on 'On Call' due to the fact we had elaborated and enjoyed the idea of filming the video the most.

John's Last Weeks Analysis

We had a variety of ideas for songs including Chase&Status- Blind Faith, The Killers- Mr Brightside, Arctic Monkeys- Ritz to Rubble, MGMT- Kids. Kasabian - Club Foot and Kings of Leon- On Call. After days of arguing and decision making we narrowed down the songs to The Killers- Mr Brightside, Kasabian- Club Foot and Kings of Leon- On Call, but we then had a obstacle to find a solution to because one other Media group had already had there minds set on The Killers - Mr Brightside, so we made the decision of scrapping that song and setting out to decide whether to pick Kings of Leon- On Call or Arctic Monkeys- Ritz to Rubble.

DJ Fresh - Louder ft. Sian Evans

Category Performance, Art, Narrative, or a Mixture. This category is a performance; the video consists of a bunch of people riding around Western America on roller skates, skateboards and BMX’s.

THE GENRE OF THE SONG- The genre of the song has been labeled ‘Dubstep’. Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music. Its overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals".

THE ARTIST, SONG TITLE, THE GENRE OF THE MUSIC- DJ Fresh ft. Sian Evans – Louder. DJ Fresh is known as a dubstep/ drum and bass production artist and is well known in the dance genre.

GOODWINS ANALYSIS-

::Desktop:DJ Fresh Screenshots:Screen shot 2011-09-29 at 2.12.15 PM.pngThis music video does demonstrate characteristics of the music genre because their active performance on their rollerskates matches the up-tempo, lively music. However, there isn’t a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The DJ and singer aren’t presented in the video as usually in dance music the artists aren’t. This is usually to put the emphasis on the beat as appose to the actual artist.

As you can see this high key lighting adds to the silhouette effect which adds to the mystery and summer theme of the music video.

DJ Fresh - Louder ft. Sian Evans

Joe

The CategoryThis qualifies for a illustration category; the video consists of lots of people riding around Western America on roller skates, skateboards and BMX’s performing tricks. It is all based around the energy and adrenaline that are present in extreme sports.

The Genre Of The Song- The genre of the song has been labeled ‘Dubstep’.Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music. Its overall sound has been described as 'tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals.

The Artist, Song Title, The Genre Of The Music- DJ Fresh ft. Sian Evans – Louder. DJ Fresh is known as a dubstep/ drum and bass production artist and is well known in the dance genre. DJ Fresh has played at really well known venues and festivals such as Wakestock, Global Gathering and Parklife UK along with other dance artists such as Nero, Katy B and Kelis.

Goodwins Analysis-

Genre Characteristics - This music video does demonstrate characteristics of the music genre because their active performance on their rollerskates matches the up-tempo, lively music. The sun and the colorful clothing makes us think of summer which was when the song was released and could be argued to be labeled the 'summer song of 2011'.

Relationships Between the Lyrics and Visuals - 'You cant tame this energy inside' is the only potential visible connection between lyrics and visuals. These lyrics are a reference to the upbeat synths and heavy beats which matches the performers 'un tamed energy'.

Relationships Between Music and Videos - The visual scene seems to change with the beat of the snare more or less throughout the whole of the video. Also when the Chorus drops the scenes turn into slow motion which matches the mellow yet powerful bass-line during the chorus.

Close up of Artists - The DJ and singer aren’t presented in the video. This is usually to put the emphasis on the music and beat as appose to the actual artist. Close ups of artists are only usually used in pop chart music usually.

Notion of Looking - There is a slight voyeuristic treatment of women in this video. The women rollerbladers are attractive and are portrayed in shorts and summer wear. However, they aren't dressed to as much of an extreme as you would expect in Rap or RnB videos.

Intertexual Reference - There isn't any, it seems that the skateboard video idea was an original.

Koceila

Locations/Lighting - The locations used are mainly consistent of what appears to be West American coastline. This is to express the summer theme that the song tries to give off, as it is a summer anthem. Therefore the lighting is high key and natural with vibrant colors to connote that summer theme. Within most of the shots there are palm trees and beaches that are related towards summer e.g. Hawaii (which is seen as one of the most exotic places in the world).

Editing/FX - The editing is fast and synchronized with the beat, dependant on the stunt preformed, and will make the viewing of the video smooth and coherent to the song. There are special effects but in the form of slow motion, all of which are done within the editing sweet rather then an FX room i.e. green screen. This is to keep the summer feel of the video that’s intended to show beauty and the naturalistic scenery that, just like the locations do, express the summer theme.

John

Props

The props used in this video consist of rollerblades, skateboards , bmx's this promotes freedom and the free will to roam around the street sand enjoy yourself. Also it is summer when this video was filmed so especially links in well with props due to people going out on their skateboards etc when it is sunny outside.

Craig Davis Analysis

For this video there is not many links between the lyrics an the video but in my opinion i would suggest that there is because as the chorus shouts out "Louder" the stunts get bigger hence the chorus. Also there is links between the lyrics and the visuals because as the song is called "Louder" the clothes the characters are wearing are bright colours and as the duration of the song follows through the colours get louder and bigger connoting the title of the song.

Camera Use

  • Extreme close ups to show the different extreme sports equipment they are using
  • Establishing shots setting the scene of the skate park
  • Tracking shots showing where the female protagonists are skating to
  • Over the shoulder shots to show how much fun they are having from their point of view
  • Close ups of a variety of skaters
  • Long shot of certain locations
  • Low angle shot when attempting to capture the natural lighting
  • High angle for certain stunts for a better view
  • Panning shots to capture the entire feel of what the on-lookers are feeling
  • Medium shots on certain stunts are also used
  • Two-shots are used to connote the friendships within having fun in summer

Manchester Orchestra - Virgin (Analysis)

Joe

The Category - This qualifies for illustration; the video tells a few stories, the video itself consisting of the 'virgin girl', the war veteran in the wheelchair, the children and the TV screen and the gas mask theme which runs throughout the duration of the film.

The Genre Of The Song - The genre of the song has been labeled 'Alternative Rock'. Other than pop/charts, rock is considered the second most popular genre of music in the world. Alternative rock consists of various subgenera that have emerged from the independent music scene since the 1980's such as grunge, brit pop, indie pop and indie pop.

The Artist, Song Title, The genre Of The Music - Manchester Orchestra - Virgin. Manchester Orchestra aren't actually from manchester, they chose their artist name because Manchester is known as the biggest 'sprouting' place for music production and they thought they might get extra recognition and such.

Koceila

Graphics/FX -

The effect at the beginning where the ears are on the persons bottom is to connote that what we hear and take in everyday is nonsense.

There are many uses of CGI at the end where the room transforms into a broken, rotted yet similar one to the room they were just sat in to show how quickly society can change from normal and calm to disrupt and corrupt. It is to connote modern day society and how certain countries which seem alright at first can quickly become violent. Also the man in the gas mask being multiplied at many moments shows the dominance of people within the war zone that is commercialism.

Locations – The locations used for the music video vary from a range of American settings. They use a supermarket, the actual city, beaches, fields and also various houses. Most of the shots have some type of commercialistic item (cigarettes, Pepsi or perfume) that is juxtaposed by the American flag merging the two meaning together implying that America is dominated by commercialism.

Lighting – Is high key at many times but also the inverse at moments of darkness. Most of it is natural however on the odd occasion it’s darkened to fit in with the images shown which are themed mostly around darkness and evil.

Editing –Is to the beat and extremely fast at times (magazines being shown). The images are put together in a way that tells a non-coherent story but you still understand what’s actually happening. Also there are a variety of fades, starting with the matress on fire, where theres a orange tinted effect that then blurs off as it changes to the next scene.

John

Props
The props used in this video consist of a burning matress, gas masks which especially denotes protecting yourself against the gas of commercialism ,cigerettes, burgers all these are all commercial products in which the music video/song is trying to potray to its audience.

Craig Davis Analysis
For this video there is no obvious link with the lyrics therefore the narrative is categorized as disjunctive. The video does not focus on the performers at all it is more focused on getting the point of commercialism across to the audience.

Camera Use

  • Long shots to set the scene
  • Close ups to introduce and show emotions on characters

  • Extreme close ups to show specifics to enhance commercialistic theme

  • Over the shoulder shots to set the scene of the video from the characters point of view
  • Low angle shots to show the vunerable characters oint of view
  • High angle shots to show the dominance of certain characters
  • Establishing shots to so the scenery of the video e.g The Beach

  • Wide angle to show the streets from the war veterans point of view

Goodwins Analysis

Genre Characteristics:
Manchester Orchestra portrays the genre of indie music because the mellow instruments and diegetic sound you would represent with most laid back rock bands. Also we would be more ousted towards the indie category because in video the performers don't show themselves due to being well known by audiences across the globe, instead they play the part of narrative story's or give a idea across to the audience.

Close Up of Artists:
In this video there is not any close ups of the artists because most artists are already known by niche audiences so they do not need to focus on showing peoples faces. The pop star silhouette is associated close ups of the performers face so get there known by people. Manchester Orchestra are mostly focused on telling a story and getting a point across to the audiences.

Joe
Relationships Between Lyrics and Visuals:
First of all, the song title is 'Virgin' and one of the scenes references is to a girl who is portrayed to us as the virgin. This is becomes apparent as later on in the video she is laying on a bed without clothes. Her lack of make-up and natural hair tell us that she us a virgin.

Notion of Looking:
Television screens are a regular occurrences in this video, this agrees with Goodwins theory, he says that as music video viewers we are persuaded to look and visualize the reasons behind the video producers work.

Intertextual References:
We got a vague idea that the TV in the video that seems to be brainwashing the children. The white house and fuzzy screen is similar to what occurs in the film 'The Ring'. Something horrific always happens when the fuzzy screen comes on.
